PDF accessibility repair

Repair PDFs for accessibility. Check them. Know what is left.

Pagorin repairs what can be repaired automatically: tags, reading order, headings, lists, tables, alt-text proposals, form-field labels, language and title, and OCR for scanned pages. It then checks the result with an independent open-source checker and tells you exactly what still needs a person.

For communications staff at public bodies, school boards, colleges and small agencies. No sales call.

Free quick check

Quick check, not a full PDF/UA check

Nothing is uploaded. The file is read by JavaScript on your own computer and never leaves it. We do not see the file or its name.

What the quick check looks at

Seven basics that a machine can read from the file's structure, in plain English, with what each one means for someone using a screen reader.

  • Tagged or notWithout tags a screen reader gets a stream of words with no headings, lists or tables to navigate by.
  • Document languageTells the screen reader which voice and pronunciation rules to use.
  • TitleThe first thing announced when the file opens. Without it, the reader hears a file name.
  • Pages with no textA scanned page is a picture; a screen reader has nothing to read until the text is recognised.
  • Form fields without labelsAn unlabelled field is announced as "edit text" with no hint of what to type.
  • Images without a descriptionA picture with no alternative text is skipped or read as "graphic".
  • Bookmarks in long documentsBookmarks let a reader jump to a section instead of paging through the whole file.

The quick check cannot judge whether headings, reading order or alt text are right, and it does not run the full PDF/UA rule set. The pilot does both: an independent checker on the repaired file, plus a list of what still needs a person.

How Pagorin repairs a document

AI proposes. Fixed rules and an independent checker decide. The page content and appearance are not changed.

  1. AI proposes the structure

For each page, a model proposes roles (heading, paragraph, list, table), reading order, table cells, alternative text for figures and labels for form fields. Scanned pages get recognised text first.

  2. Fixed rules build the tags

Deterministic rules check every proposal and write the tag tree, language, title and metadata into your original file. Then veraPDF, an independent open-source checker, tests the result against the PDF/UA-1 profile.

  3. You get the file and a plain report

The repaired PDF, the checker result ("passes automated checks" or "does not pass", with the reasons), and the list of items a person should confirm: alt text, table headers, reading order.

What it repairs, and what it cannot do

Tested on real public documents

In a blind test in October 2026 on 20 PDFs from municipal, school-board and university sites, 16 passed the independent checker with no human edits. None passed before repair.

A pass is not the whole story

A reviewer still found text-grouping mistakes in 7 of the 20, six of which had passed the checker. We changed the grouping rules afterwards. That is why every delivery lists what to look at.

Forms are the hardest

Forms passed least often in the test (2 of 5). If your backlog is mostly forms, the pilot is a good way to see what you would get before committing to more.

Numbers from our technology report. "Passes" means veraPDF 1.30 reports no failed PDF/UA-1 rule. That covers what a machine can check; it does not show that alt text or reading order are right.

What we do not claim

Pagorin never says a document is "compliant" or "certified". It says "passes automated checks" or "does not pass", and lists what remains. A checker pass is necessary, not sufficient.

No person checks every page

  • Structure is proposed by AI and built by fixed rules.
  • The report tells you which pages and items to look at.
  • You, or a reviewer you choose, make the final call.

Not legal advice

  • Our deadlines page links to the official texts.
  • Which rules apply to you depends on who you are and where.
  • Ask your counsel or accessibility office.

Try it on five of your own documents

The pilot is US$99, one time: up to 5 PDFs and 25 pages in total, repaired and checked, on your private order page within 5 business days, with a report per document. Full refund if we are late, or on request within 14 days of delivery.
